Users review: Just got back from the 7pm showing. More than 30 people in the theater. Had three theaters showing it in the Twin Cities Minneapolis/St Paul Minnesota.I have to say this third and final installment was the best of the three in terms of capturing the philosophical essence of the novel. They used narration to good effect, and used the device I think is the most effective ... having philosophical discussions amongst themselves rather than some contrived debate or speech. Though John Galts radio speech came off well condensed, capturing the spirit of the three hour version.My only nit in casting was that I thought Joaquim de Almeida was quite a bit too old for the part. He looked more like Dagnys grandfather than her childhood boyfriend. My favorite DAnconia was Jsu Garcia of part I. He had the young playboy look.

Users review: Brilliantly acted, superbly written and as one would expect from a picture by Martin Scorsese, it is a masterclass of directorial craft.Showy when it needs to be, but also quiet and contemplative. The Wolf of Wall Street is the equivalent of something like Good Fellas or even more so Casino but set in the world of finance. The suits might be more expensive but the people who wear them are just as sick and violent as their street-mob counterparts. Sardonic in humor and unflinching in showing the depravity of its characters, it marks somewhat of a different approach to the world of stock-trading than Oliver Stones Wall Street.Where Stone seems more in line with Bertold Brecht who considered theater (or in this case film) a moral institution, does Scorsese take the position of the omnipresent observer of the dark side of the American and in many cases the human dream.Leonard DiCaprio gives another stellar performance of great intensity and even greater tragedy while this tale of corruption, greed and self-righteousness unfolds.Its a vast panorama that shows how during the last twenty-five to thirty years gullibility as well as our innate greed make all of us accomplices in this never-ending pyramid scheme far away from any reality.One could almost hear Scorseses clerical background come to the fore again, according to which nobody is without sin, and therefore we are all susceptible to corruption.It is our decision on which side we choose to live that makes the difference. For every individual but also society as a whole.

Users review: I followed Kevin Smiths work on Tusk very closely as I listen to his pod-cast. I love his stuff, sure the guy has bad movies but most directors that have been in the business as long as he has have made at least one less-than-stellar film. So naturally I was excited to see what Kevin Smith did with this material. When him and Scott came up with the concept, I remember thinking it had potential to be a great horror-comedy if handled right. Unfortunately, this film was not handled right. There were numerous times where the film could have used another pair of eyes. And good on Kev for making something really independent, but that turns out to be a really bad thing for this in that Kevin must have missed some of the more major flaws in the film. Some of the acting is unbearable. Theres one scene when Guy LaPointe and Michael Parks character have an interchange in a flashback and it was one the most annoying things Ive seen this year and it felt like it went on forever. It felt like another segment of Movie 43. Like it belonged in that movie. It took a great actor and a great performer and made them absolutely repugnant. I had to leave the theater halfway through the scene and return when I heard it was over. And I know you probably think that Im just the one guy who didnt think it was funny, but we had more walk outs in that scene that anything else I sat through this year. The pacing of the film was strange. It went from being incredibly interesting in the first 30 mins to a complete dead stop at Genesis Rodriguezs monologue. Good on the director for telling us what the back story is instead of showing us. The monologue goes on for a good 3-5 minutes and its unbearably slow. Shes a great actor, we get it. But we didnt need that long of a break from the main story.This movie suffers from something that a lot of horror movies suffer from now and I dont think people realize its happening. Justin Longs character was not a great guy. He was kind of a jerk. So when he inevitably gets put in a walrus suit, guess who cared... No one. We were all kinda like...well good. On top of all that, the walrus suit is one of the most laughably bad designs Ive seen in awhile. Props to Kevin for taking the practical route with it but it looked like a cheap Don Post Halloween mask only all over Justin Longs body. Theres a moment near the end where Michael Parks hits Justin Longs walrus face and one of the tusks moves across his face as if it was attached to the suit and not his face. This was the only time I laughed in the film. Not to mention my laugh was the only laugh in the whole theater for the whole movie. I felt compelled to ask other audience members what they thought and as expected, there were tons of Kevin Smith fans in the audience. They all used the word disappointed. We were all sad. Its not just that the movie does things poorly intentionally but that it seems to not notice how horribly it was put together. It needed another edit, some shots needed re-shot, and it needed another draft badly. Im very disappointed and I feel bad for hating this film. I wanted so bad to love it. I feel bad for Kevin. Good for him making the movie he wanted to make, but unfortunately that movie was a 3/10.

Users review: A highly trained, retired field operative resorts to violence as the only way to free a Russian prostitute from brutal Russian men who are part of an international crime organization. The many years of retirement didnt show any sign of rust on Robert McCall (Washington) as he ran through his adversaries, dismantling one after another, without batting an eye. He made it look too easy. These bad Russian men had nothing for him, which is probably the biggest problem with this film. There is nothing interesting about a Good vs Evil film with weak bad guys. The filmmakers did work hard at trying to make Teddy, played by Marton Csokas, look ruthless and deadly. But I was never convinced, and I doubt whether the many who saw this film with me at the Toronto International Film Festival were convinced as well.I found the film rather boring for the most part, with a setup unusually longer than anything Hollywood released in decades. The dialogue was heavy handed. The supporting roles didnt provide nothing more than their vulnerability to the scum of society, which beckoned on a hero like McCall to teach them a lesson or two.And as I stated in my summary, you have already seen this film a thousand times already: the bad guys shooting big, scary guns and rarely grazing the hero, the hero walking away in slow motion from an explosion he caused, bad guys tracking hero down in this sort of cat-and-mouse thing, damsels in distress, high octane martial arts. Wait, the filmmakers did try to make the film unique by excluding a car chase and having McCall kill each and every bad guy in the most unique way every time. A bullet to the cranium wasnt good enough. No. He had to use methods like overflowing bathroom sinks to electrocute someone. He seemed like he was trying to one-up himself every time. The hero doesnt make any mistakes in the process, even taking the time to catch a fly ball to win the company baseball game. The way he swooped in, in slow motion, and snatched that ball from the joker character who thought he had it was roll-your-eyes worthy and completely laughable.However, when the film got going it started to be exactly what I expected; an entertaining, highly stylized, popcorn film. At the same time, being Fuquas weakest directorial effort since his first film, I cannot recommend it. 5/10

Users review: First of all, I loved the first one! It was a new breath with lots of colors and the dark humor it had. However... This follow-up couldnt have been worse... It is for kids from age 5 to 12. Seriously, I watch a lot of movies and I am a watcher who loves original stuff. This was such a disappointment. If you love action with no basis, go ahead and be my guest, but if you are, sorry to say, a good movie watcher who loves quality, show mercy on your money and spend it on charity or something! Ill give it a 3 out of 10 since so much money has been spent on this, and obviously, no matter how bad it is, a lot of people worked for this. Very cheesy text, very cheap scenario (feels like it was written in an hour), oh my God it was so bad.

Users review: Greetings again from the darkness. Its tough and probably unfair to write about a film project when key pieces remain unseen. Writer/Director Ned Bensons brilliant first take on the story was released at Toronto Film Festival in two perspectives: Him and Her. A massive re-edit produced Them, this version released in theatres. As you might expect, knowledge that more exists ... and in probably a more effective story telling format ... renders us a bit frustrated with the blended version. Still, there is plenty here to warrant a look.This viewers frustration stems mostly from the long and winding road we travel understanding something tragic has caused the split between El (the titular Eleanor Rigby) and Conor. We are offered a brief glimpse of their happy times, but never get to know them as a happy couple. Instead, Conor is shown trying to re-assemble the pieces, while El tries to move on to a different puzzle altogether.While the story unfolds in teeth-grinding fashion, it doesnt offset the powerful emotion and personal intensity brought to the screen by both James McAvoy (Conor) and Jessica Chastain (El). Mr. McAvoy has quietly evolved into one of the more interesting actors working, while Ms. Chastain proves herself to be among the best each time she crawls inside a role and makes it her own. We feel for each of them, before we even really know them at all.Other superb work comes from a sterling supporting cast that includes screen vets William Hurt, Isabelle Huppert, Viola Davis and Ciaran Hinds; as well as Bill Hader, Jess Weixler and Nina Arianda. Thats seven characters (plus the two leads) of which we yearn to learn more. Ms. Davis is especially effective in her all too brief appearance as a professor cutting El very little slack. And Mr. Hurt delivers a terrific monologue that strikes a chord.So all of these wonderful pieces make for an spell-binding what-if that possibly gets answered in the dual-perspective version. The coldness and lack of understanding in the first 45 minutes cant offset the emotion and sadness that each character feels. Rumor has it that Him and Her will get their release this year, and if so, Ill be there in an attempt to complete both puzzles.

Users review: I never saw the first Think Like a Man(2012), but I enjoyed the sequel, If you are expecting The Hangover(2009) meets Bridesmaid(2011) from what you saw in the trailers, Well it kind of is, but it does not quite go there. This film is only for a entertaining ride, and for anybody just to sit back and forget about your problems.Kevin Hart was better here then he was in About Last Night, any scenes he is in, he milks it for all it worth. But the rest of the cast are pretty memorable also, the men and ladies really bring it all here. The Las Vegas scene is also good, and becomes its own character. There are also some good dramatic moments. See this movie with friends, and I hope you have good time.

Users review: World War Z is a zombie outbreak movie that supposedly bases itself on the amazing book of the same name by Max Brooks. What this movie truly is, is a shamefully mediocre attempt to create a movie that appeals to the widest audience possible. Pee established fan base from the book? Check. Star power (this is Brad Pitt)? Check. Focuses on intensity rather than horror and gore to not alienate non zombie fans? Check. Safe, young PG 13 rating? Check. All the makings are here because this is what the big Hollywood studio wanted. Despite the fact this movie doesnt resemble the book at all, it appears that those attached to make this movie tried to make a decent movie such as the visually interesting director Marc Foster who wanted to make a movie with a message which would emulate the tone the book was going for. However, the big studio disliked this and demanded rewrites and re-shooting that damaged the relationship between the director and Brad and results in a quick, intense action movie that lacks the character development and messages it needed to be a truly memorable movie because almost every one of those scenes were cut so much to the point that central characters get barley any lines. While the action scenes are intense and enjoyable on their own and Marc foster adds style to the lack of substance but its just not enough to save this movie. While it is better than it had any right to be thanks to Marc, it needs more and it lacks in crucial substance. However from the reviews and box office reports it appears Hollwood has succeeded in creating a successful marketable movie that everyone will eat up and it will be too late when we all get the nasty aftertaste.....
